Dr Tashi Samdup is from lower Thimphu. He has been in the civil service since 1991 and has a working experience of over 29 years.
Prior to the present post, he served as the Director General for the Department of Livestock from 2013 till April 2020. He also served as the Director for the erstwhile Council of RNR Research of Bhutan. In addition, he also worked in the National Animal Hospital at Chubachu, Royal Veterinary Epidemiological Centre (now National Centre for Animal Health) at Serbithang, Brown Swiss Farm and Horse Breeding Farm at Bumthang and National Jersey Breeding Centre at Samtse in various capacities contributing significantly to the development of livestock sector in the country.
Dr Tashi holds a Ph.D and a Masters Degree from Wageningen University, Netherlands. During his MSc degree, he was awarded the Prof. Henk Vander Plas award (Gold Medalist) for being the most outstanding student amongst the master students in January 1997. He also has a Bachelor Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Surgery and Animal Husbandry from Kerala Agriculture University in India.
